7 gifts for the Ultralight Backpacker in your life video
I will be bringing all of the following with me on my trip from Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia through Maryland up to Penn Marr State Park.
✅Sea to Summit Lightweight Compression sack, 20L mine is surf blue or spicy orange or olive green, $39.95, 4.7 oz, 134g. This uses a 70 denier nylon which is more durable than the 30 denier nylon of the ultra sil sack, but weighs more. I appreciate the plastic, seatbelt like clip to secure my sleeping bag inside this compression sack
✅Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil compression sack, 13L, $42.95, mine is zinnia yellow, there’s also atoll blue which looks like a highlighter version of ocean blue, and high rise grey which is a very light grey. 2.9 oz, 82g. The 20L one is 3.4 oz or 96g so it’s even lighter than the lightweight compression sack. I appreciate that it uses 30 denier nylon which will last for a long time, and that there’s the attention to the environment of making it with a non PFC finish. It won’t be as durable as the lightweight compression sack in 70 denier nylon, but it’ll way less.
✅ Showed Nemo Disco 15 in large packbag. Weighs 2 lb, 15 oz or 1.33kg
✅Announced which stuff sack the Nemo was able to fit into.
✅TPU map case, mine Is large, goes for $44.95 however there’s also a medium version for $39.95 and a small version that goes for $34.95. The large version is 3.6 oz or 102g, the medium version is 2.7 oz or 78g, and the small version is 1.8oz or 51g. For Americans, the large is 13.1 inches by 16.9 inches. For people everyone else in the world, the large is 332 x 430mm. I appreciate their attention to the environment in making it PVC free. It’s impressive in its waterproof, freezeproof, and abrasion resistant TPU material.
✅Airlite towel, large , $22.95. The medium is $17.95, and the small is $12.95. The large is 24 inches by 47 inches, or 60 cm by 120 cm. The medium is 39 inches by 20 inches, or 100 by 50cm. The small is 32 inches by 16 inches, or 80 cm x 40 cm. The large weighs 2.4 oz or 67g. The medium weighs 1.7oz or 47g. The small weighs 1.1 oz or 30g.
✅Nylon 66 Pocket trowel, $14.95, 87g or 3.1 oz. If a human craps in the woods, does it make a sound? I know My Life Outdoors frequently recommends the Ultralight BoglerCo trowel ($17.95) which weighs .48 oz or 13.5g from Garage grown gear however, the Bogler looks like it could slice through your pack, which is a problem i don’t anticipate with the Sea to Summit nylon 66. I appreciate that the Sea to Summit nylon 66 trowel folds in half which will make it easier to fit into your pack among other items.
✅Mosquito Head Net without Insect Shield, $13.95, 30g or 1oz. According to Bill Bryson of A Walk in the woods, once you get to New England, you can expect black flies nipping at your scalp. This bug net should save you some annoyances, and won’t take up much space in your pack.
✅Long spoon, $12.95, 12g, 0.4oz, It’s anodized aluminum. While I would prefer something titanium from TOAKS or MSR, it’s good for the price and will make it easy for you to get the last nibbles out of the bottom of your dehydrated meal bag without having to reach to far. The Toaks titanium one from Garage grown gear is cheaper at $9.95, is more durable, and weighs more at 19g or .65 oz. Since the weight savings are negligible, personally I prefer the convenience of being able to buy all of my kit from Sea to Summit directly. If you buy all seven items in the same sizes, it comes out to $192.65 US, $277.79 Canadian, or $184.74 Euros as of 12/28/24
✅If you want an amazing, inexpensive backpacking stove or pot, FireMaple is amazing. The stove I’m bringing on my trip is the MSR Pocket Rocket 2 with the FireMaple G3 pot.
Here’s how to avoid issues with the MSR Pocket Rocket 2.
