12 lb Base Weight Gear List
The long awaited day has finally come. I officially have all of my gear for my southbound AT thru hike. Here is the base weight gear (food and water not included) I plan to carry on my 5 month journey. I’m going to continue doing shakedown camping trips with this setup to ensure I love it. So far, so good!
Disclaimers– I do represent 5 incredible brands that are making my thru hike possible: Vasque, Nemo Equipment, Osprey, LEKI, and Darn Tough. I back these companies 100% (or I wouldn’t choose to use their gear for 2,000+ miles). Secondly, I haven’t mastered my clothing system so that very well could change. And finally, I do not have “official” weight for most items so I didn’t list the weight unless I was sure it was correct.

SOBO flip flop March ’17. Looking forward to reading your experiences.

Thank you so much for following along!
Are you worried about having enough food storage for the 100 mile wilderness (and the Smokies) in the Exos 48? I’ve been thinking about getting the Exos 58 because I never considered the 48 to be big enough for all that food.
Best of luck with everything! I’m considering a SOBO in June if a few things in my life fall a certain way.
Hi Chad! I just finished a 4 day shakedown where I carried 5 days of food, and it all fit nicely in my pack! I will be doing a food drop through the 100 Mile Wilderness when I head SOBO. I feel everything fits okay because of compression stuff sacks. During my shakedown, I met someone with the 58 who said he wishes he had gotten the 48. But if you’re more comfortable with the 58, stick to that! Happy Trails!!
Thanks for sharing your list! I’m planning to go SOBO when I do the trail in a couple years, too. Could you talk a little more about your sponsorships (whether you got free gear, discounts, etc. and how you got them)? If you don’t want to put it here I can be reached at bcgobraves at gmail. Thanks, and good luck with your hike!
Have you condidered ditching the trowel? Sticks are useful and everywhere! Save yourself some ounces! I ditched mine after day 6 on the Long Trail.
Hi Rambles, I will consider that! You’re right about the sticks 🙂
I don’t see a stove on your list…what do you cook with?
Hi Shane! I’m going stove less! I’m too lazy to cook at the end of a long day. I’ll eat warm meals when I’m in town!
My wife and I are working our the details for are SOBO this 2016 season. I carried a lot larger pack. I’m looking at a Vargo external frame pack. But not sure of I can get my gear in a 30 pound limit bag.
Awesome gear! Enjoy the journey!
I didn’t notice a stove, pot and spork. Download AWOL’s pdf to your phone to save weight. Weight everything with a digital scale to get an exact weight. Have fun! I’ll be flip flopping in 2017. Gary. RoamingGnome.net
