20 days and counting!

The joys of being a mother…and a daughter

When I announced 2+ years ago that I wanted to hike the AT my mom was a bit nervous.  I heard the usual “You shouldn’t hike alone” and “It’s dangerous” etc.  My dad showed my mom articles and blogs about female hikers and slowly my mom realized that all would be okay!  Now she emails me links to articles and posts meme’s on my Facebook page.  I thought all was good in the world!

And then I invited my 21 year old son, Dude, to come along on the trail.  I realized all of my mother’s fears and then some.  Balancing my mother’s fears with my own motherly fears has sucked  been interesting, to say the least.  I have discussed LNT, pink blazing (Just don’t Dude, really, don’t!), being courteous at camp and what not to do at McAfee Knob (he’s not allowed to send me any pictures while up there). Although I still have worries, I think I have worked through them enough that almost all will be forgotten as I trek up the first mountain.

It’s been a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions for all of us, but my mom is now excited and practically pushing us out the door (this may have to do with the fact that we have both moved in with my parents).  My dad has packed and repacked in preparation for hiking with us for the first 3 weeks.  The Dude hopes that he is all ready to go, but he’s more of a doer than a planner so he’s relying on mom to make sure he has everything he needs.  As for me, my phone app shows that I have 20 days until departure and only 115 more hours of work left….not that I’m counting or anything 🙂  I’m still not sure that I should have started my resignation letter as “With great excitement I submit my resignation” but what else was I supposed to write?

Yeah…I had to embarrass the family with that crazy pic!
