Planning a Section Hike of Massachusetts

Hello to my three readers. (Hi, Mom!)

I have something pretty exciting to announce. This late summer and early fall I am embarking on a section hike of the Massachusetts portion of the Appalachian Trail. I am trying not to wish away the months between now and then, but I am extremely excited and anxious to start this hike.

This will be the longest backpacking trip I have ever attempted. I feel like the journey will give me a sense of whether I want to pursue completing a thru-hike in the future. Also, as a Massachusetts/Boston resident for the past 7+ years, I have never explored the western side of the Commonwealth. This is because the Berkshires are about 2 hours away from Boston. The White Mountains are also 2 hours away from my apartment. The Whites always win.

I feel confident about all of my gear. I’ll probably bring most of the gear I brought on my first trip, sans the cotton long sleeve tshirt. I just have few small things to iron out, most of which is weather-dependent.

The biggest logistical hurdle has been figured out. My lovely roomate and friend, Adam, is going to follow me out to Greylock Community Center (NOBO mile 1593.3) near the border of Massachusetts and Vermont, to drop off my car. I like the idea of having my car right there when I finish (so I can immediately drive and get a cheeseburger). And then he is going to take me down to my starting point, Undermountain Road in Connecticut (NOBO mile 1501.1).

I won’t know a lot until it is a little closer to August; mainly, what clothes I plan to wear and what clothes I plan to sleep in. And exactly what food I’m bringing. And exactly what I want in my misc/ditty bag. And I want to go to Apple and get my battery replaced. Aaaand maybe I should make a list…bye!

    Hi Emily Sue:

This caught my eye because I am about to embark on a section hike of at least Southern MA starting next week. We are going to hike from the Mass Pike down to Bear Mountain in CT – not as adventurous as you, but should be a good trip. I’ve done the AT in MA many times and it is a really beautiful section. You are going to love it.
It will be a bit hotter when you are planning it, but still very enjoyable. Good luck!

Thanks for your comment, George! I hope you have a blast on your hike. I am really looking forward to soaking in the beauty of Western, Mass for a week. And secretly, I am hoping for it to be warm so I can take advantage of some of those gorgeous swimming holes.

How was it? How many miles did you do a day? I’m trying to do this in 3 nights 4 days and am wondering. Thanks!
