5 Months on Trail (Day 154)

Sue from The Sterling Inn dropped off a small group of us at the trailhead after breakfast this morning. I’d eaten as much as I could and wasn’t carrying much food since I’d be arriving in our next town in only two days.

Easy Climbs

The morning started cold and foggy, but the sun came out before long. There were two small climbs on the agenda for today, although they seem to barely register on the difficulty scale after what we completed in New Hampshire and southern Maine. Hiking on steep, exposed rocks is a completely different experience than hiking on a dirt trail. I feel like I’m finally enjoying going uphill again.

The views from the top of Pleasant Pond Mountain and Moxie Bald Mountain weren’t spectacular, but the day was clear, and the landscape was visible for miles. I am also enjoying looking down on all the ponds that surround us.

I stopped for lunch today at Moxie Pond and enjoyed sitting on its shore. Since leaving Vermont, the bugs have also stopped bothering me, which makes breaks by the water much more enjoyable.

Reminiscing

A few of us are camping tonight at the Moxie Bald Lean-to, and Timberdoodle, BoBo, and I ate dinner with a SOBO hiker at the picnic table. We shared funny memories from earlier days on the trail and talked about all the funny characters we’d met along the way. The southbound hiker said he’d pass along some messages to our friends behind us on the trail.

We talked until dark and then retired to our tents. Tomorrow we walk into Monson, ME.

Fun to watch your “miles remaining” shrink! 👍🙂

Sarah, five months in. Southern Maine’s rocks and the Kennebec ferry behind you, and the miles remaining are getting small. Rooting for you through the last stretch. We were the 3 SOBO section hikers who met you on this day! We were setting up our tents early when a steady line of NOBOs moved through our camp near Bald Mountain Brook!
