AT 6: Vermont… What Happened To “Vermud”

Photos and a video showcasing Vermont’s fall foliage follow this blog update

Vermud?

Vermud is a term we have heard quite a lot during our thru hike. It is a term coined by hikers to describe apparent muddy and aggravating trail conditions found in Vermont. After knocking Vermont off the list we can safely say… “what happened to Vermud?”

150 miles. All Vermont. No mud. Okay, well there was a little mud… but you could walk on top of it without sinking in. It was rather dry and the fresh bed of fall leaves created a nice cushion. Either way, the section of trail where we actually came across this so called mud only consisted of roughly 15 – 20 trail miles. So in all we can say our experience with Vermud was quite mud… less. We saw way more mud in Maine and the south. So, in conclusion we can equate these mudless conditions to either the current drought in this portion of the northeast or a common case of thru hiker exaggeration. A truth we may never know.

Fall in New England

I do not believe we could have been in a better location to experience fall. For nearly 6 weeks we have been experiencing fall color change. From Gorham, NH… to peak color change around Killington, VT… until the end of Vermont where nearly all of the leaves were on the ground… it was amazing.

Then the unthinkable happened… we walked into Massachusetts to find that many of the trees present were either still green or just beginning to turn. As we conquer Massachusetts and head for Connecticut it seems we shall get to witness peak fall foliage a second time.

Currently we have 667.1 miles left and are nearing Connecticut. Stay tuned for another update on Massachusetts and Connecticut in the near future.

In the mean time… enjoy this video of Vermont and some photography provided by yours truly.
