Appalachian Trail Thru Hiker Drowns in Virginia
A 38-year-old Appalachian Trail thru-hiker died Wednesday morning at a hospital after being found unresponsive in a hotel pool in Front Royal on Tuesday night. Authorities suspect a medical emergency may have contributed to his drowning.
Micheal Anthony Glass, of Dayton, Ohio, was found in the pool at the Baymont by Wyndham hotel shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday. Front Royal Police Department officers responded to a reported drowning, entered the pool to retrieve Glass, and immediately began CPR. Life-saving efforts continued with the arrival of Warren County fire and rescue personnel, who then transported Glass to Warren Memorial Hospital. He was later transferred to Winchester Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries the following morning.

The incident remains under investigation, though police do not suspect foul play at this time. Major Zachary King of the Front Royal Police Department stated in an email on Thursday, “Our preliminary investigation shows Mr. Glass may have suffered a medical emergency; however, we are conducting a joint investigation with the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine any contributing factors.” King added, “We did not find any suspicious items or paraphernalia that would suggest a drug overdose.”
