AT Hiker Found Dead in Tent Near Damascus, VA

Authorities confirmed that the body of an Appalachian Trail hiker was found on the AT in Washington County, Virginia, early Sunday morning. WCSO said deputies found the hiker, who has been identified as 55-year-old Michael Charles Lombardo of Dunnellon, Florida, dead in his tent off Mountain City Road (just south of the town of Damascus on the AT).

Washington County Sheriff Blake Andis said the body appeared to have been in the tent for several days, and foul play is not suspected at this time. Lombardo’s remains have been transported to the Medical Examiner’s office to undergo an autopsy.

Is this where I respond to the article about taking Amtrak to the AT? Thank you! At last! I wish there was more info on taking Amtrak to or from a trail other than what is in train schedules. There is nothing like personal experiences. Also, not everyone has a car or someone to drive them to or from a trail. I took Amtrak to Harpers Ferry and the AT is only a block away from the trail! There is also an outfitter very close by. And restaurants. This is the type of info I almost never see in articles about trails.
