Catching That Mid-day Flight to Georgia

Tomorrow, it begins…

Here we go.  The time has come. I’ve done the research, collected the gear, and prepared both body and mind for what is to be the grandest adventure I have ever undertaken.  Tomorrow, I fly from Houston to Atlanta to be picked up by a good friend, after which I will fill up that bear bag with dehydrated carbs, granola bars and a whole bunch of tuna (delicious, right?) then prepare to hit the approach trail to Springer Mountain bright and early Sunday morning.

A little bit about me

Since this post serves as an introduction to my position on this website, I’d like to give you some background on myself.

Simply put, I’m just a 22-year-old kid from Mississippi (wow this kid is from MS and knows how to write and use a computer??).  Sure do.  In 2010, I moved to Houston, Texas, a huge move that was at the time very difficult but one that I now look back upon as a challenging and enriching experience.  After all, new experiences are what life is all about, right? Pushing that comfort zone to the limit then blasting past it, man! That’s the good stuff.  Though I rep Houston hard now, when I graduated high school I couldn’t wait to get as far away from the Lone Star state as possible.  After weighing out all my options, I decided upon Mississippi State University and became a Dawg.  Throughout college I made friends and memories that I’ll never forget and now I’m here. With itchy feet.  So itchy that I’m about to put those feet to the test for damn near 2,200 miles.  Georgia to Maine.  Chances are, however, you’re reading this post on the Trek with prior knowledge of the AT so I won’t go into any more details.

Why the hell am I doing this?

From an early age, I took camping trips with church groups and friends alike, and quickly adopted a fondness for the outdoors and playing outside.  But backpacking, an entirely different animal, I didn’t begin obsessing over until last summer.  I took a trip with two friends across the American Southwest and backpacked through Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, Joshua Tree, and some other popular destinations for outdoors enthusiasts.  The whole idea of carrying absolutely everything you need to live on your back was so simple and so beautiful to me.  I wanted more.  I began to read more and more about backpacking and discovered the Appalachian Trail.  From that exact moment until this very one, I’ve been rigorously chasing the dream of a thru-hike; Sunday, it all goes down.  I will then take my first steps on the Appalachian Trail.  Then, I will put physical strength and mental fortitude to the test.  And I can’t wait to share it with you.  I hope you’ve enjoyed this article and would love for your support throughout this journey.  Feel free to hit that subscribe button to stay updated with my trek!
