Christened by the AT

5 days out on the trail and my spirits are high! It’s been a wild ride and everything still feels so surreal. But a few noteworthy events happened to make me feel like I have been christened out here on the trail so far:

Springer Mountain

I summited springer mountain at 11 am on 3/11. Day hikers, section hikers, and thru hikers alike rejoiced at the sight of the first official blaze of the AT. So many emotions were coursing through me but I would say that optimism was the most prominent feeling I had. I was optimistic about the journey ahead of me, optimistic about my own capabilities, and optimistic about everything the trail has to offer.

Weather

In the 4 days that it took to get from springer mountain to neel gap, we got it all. There was rain, snow, and sleet. The sun only showed itself for a few hours one afternoon, but it was enough to warm everyone up and lift everyone’s spirits. Especially since it came out as I was ending my hike for the day and walking towards camp!

First view of day 2 on the trail. We were not expecting that!

Trail magic

Day 2 proved to be a cold and dreary day. I got my gloves wet in the morning when I was putting my snow covered tent away. Our big climb of the day was sassafras mountain, and at the bottom of the mountain we came across our first trail magic. Coolhand and his son River set up camp for the day with a pop up tent, chairs, hot water for coffee and tea, snacks, and a portable heater. I drank some coffee and dried my gloves off and i felt like a new woman!

I still can’t believe that I’m out here. I can’t stop smiling. All I can think about and what keeps my legs moving is how I am living out my dream!

Glad to know you’re still smiling after all the nasty weather. I think the Brew Crew will have to name a beer in your honor when you return
