Day 37 – Back To Work

Today we departed Damascus and the Trail Days festival for 2023. It was great seeing and old faces and meeting new ones. We took our time packing up and saying goodbyes. Our ride back to Erwin TN, our last place along the trail, went by quickly.

We got a food resupply in town with what ended up being more food than necessary. Our packs felt loaded and the weight was oppressive. We also filled our stomachs with Taco Bell. We hung out at Uncle Johnnys Hostel repacking our recently acquired food. Sip beat Rabbit at Chess in a back and forth game. We only have 4 miles on our agenda today so we were in no rush. Eventually 3:30 rolled around and we struggled to get our packs on and start walking.

The 4 miles was particularly steep, but we made quick work. My pack actually felt ok because I was able to unburden myself of my bear canister. The 2.3lb canister and winter clothes were sent home. I’m sure when my food weight gets eaten up, I’ll notice more of a difference.

We got to Curley Maple Gap Shelter shortly after 5PM and ate and played cards. I taught everyone a game called “Oh Hell” similar to spades. Sip won again making him 2/2 on the day.

We turned in early after the long weekend. Tomorrow we have 13 miles planned and are looking to get back to Damascus, on foot this time, by next Monday.

Stow away in my pack again tomorrow for Day 38 on the Appalachian Trail.

Pre-trail Taco Bell? You are truly a warrior. I gave up on the Bell after finding flecks of meat/cheese in my vegan order (as welcome as maggots would be to you), but my adult son will easily destroy a $20 bill there on Chalupas and Gorditas. I had to get a 2nd mortgage for TP. Don’t leave a field of white lily’s in your wake.

I’m fortunate that Taco Bell has no ill effects on my GI system. But I’m aware of the rumors lol
