Don’t Feed The Turtles

60 days from my first steps on the trail. Gear has been packed, weighed, unpacked, reweighed so many times it’s starting to look worn! I’m pretty happy with my gear considering what’s available and the amount I’ve spent. (more on gear later)

Food prep is the main concern and focus theses days. The poor UPS driver thinks I run a test kitchen for Amazon.

He brings me a box or two of freeze dried goodies every other day. Today it was meat. Chicken, ground beef and shrimp. Yum! Why should I eat anything different on the trail than I do at home? Right? Well, as I was loading each ziplock baggie with a scoop of veggies, rice, pasta and meat I caught a glimpse of the shrimp container.

“Not for human consumption”

Great! I bought turtle food.

I don’t have the room or desire to carry enough food for me and the turtles!

My boyfriend and I are doing the Georgia portion of the AT in October this year over the course of 8 days. Would you mind sharing your list of food that you are taking with you on the trail? How many snacks, meals per day are you estimating? We’ve done a ton of research on what time pack for a section hike but I always like to get others perspective on food varieties, etc. Thanks much!

Too funny! I have a pet turtle who happens to be addicted to those little dried shrimps. The smell is enough to keep most away!

Someone who eats more than ramen and peanut butter wraps? I’d love to hear more about your meals and food strategy!

I bought my shrimp at the local Asian market. All freeze dried in the seafood section. Kept them in the freezer till I was ready for vacuum sealing.
