I have no idea how many British folk hike the A.T. every year or if anyone even keeps count, but after two or three weeks of ramen, I’d probably eat one. As I’ve only done short hikes (less than 4 days) I haven’t had to worry too much about food or trying to suck down 6,000+ calories a day. I usually just grab an 8 oz salami, some string cheese, some Bechtle noodles, tomato paste in a tube… it makes a passable spaghetti. Or if I get lazy, I grab a couple of Mountain House meals to go along with my GORP.

I’d like to know what my options are. I don’t dislike peanut butter but I’m not a huge fan either. Looking into freeze drying/dehydrating food, it looks like high fatty foods don’t do well. Those are just the things a growing hiker needs. So, what to do?

Well, a few days (er, … a week) has gone by since starting this. I don’t want to delete it but I will make a detour here. I wanted to write a review of the few places I’ve been to along the A.T. One was already covered. I haven’t checked the second (yet). But, the third has NOT been covered on this site.

While in Boiling Springs, I was talking with a few of the Class of ’15 thru hikers. I only remember two trailnames: Amish and Yeti. I don’t remember the “kid” who’s eyes lit up when he heard a day guy left an entire 16” pepperoni pizza for whomever wanted it. The kid “dropped” his chocolate ice cream pretty fast. But to be fair, only long enough to snag the pizza and 2 liter of soda!! In true A.T. fashion he did share it. The other guy was a little older, had some tatts, and was fighting some poison ivy. I hope you’ve beat it. Sorry I don’t remember your names guys.

So, anywho, while talking to Pizza Kid, I mentioned a place I know and frequent when I find myself in Duncannon, PA. The Road Hawg is a must-stop whether you’re thru hiking, day hiking, or touring by car. The A.T. passes right in front of their door. And while it’s probably too late for most of the NOBO hikers, I’m hoping some of the SOBO and/or Flip-Flops can catch it.

They are located at 42 South Main St, Duncannon, PA 17020. If your Google machines aren’t charged, it’s at the junction of South Main, Elm, and US 15. That would be after crossing over Sherman’s Creek, past the Ford dealer (on the left), you’ll be making a right turn at the American Legion to get to the US322 bridge. On the opposite corner of the American Legion, just under the US15 overpass will be the Road Hawg.

If I can figure out how to attach pics, I’ll include the menu. If I can’t, know that The Bully is the way to go. It is simply hiker heaven on a bun. It started life as a brisket that is then covered in grilled onions. The Cooper Sharp cheddar adds to the fat content. What is a sandwich that doesn’t include bacon? Doesn’t really matter because The Bully is complete with Double Smoked bacon and to top it all off there is Hawg Sauce. I’m pretty sure they are still looking for the body of the last guy that asked about it. So, if you are in search of your 5,000 calories a day, this is probably one of the best places to start and/or finish.

They also have the usual standards of a BBQ place; ribs, chicken, pulled port, along with sides. The Mac & Cheese is always good.

Disclaimer: It’s not just me that thinks this place is good. On their walls are a couple of 2nd Place People’s Choice Awards from various competitions along with the usual newsprint write-ups.
