The Glory Days [Days 1-12]

I didn’t know what being a thruhiker felt like until I found myself sitting on a changing table in a bathroom eating chicken salad.

That pretty much sums up my last twelve days

I began my thruhiker from Springer on March 27th. I was lucky enough to meet up with @Kylie AKA Mumbles(another trek blogger) that same day. Together we have weaved in and out of different groups but today we can be found at the NOC.

If someone were to ask me, 12 days ago, what I thought my life was going to be like for the next several days I would say “adventurous”.

I would be right…. but not in the sense that I would assume. Typically when people think of adventure they think of something that is exhilarating and unknown. While a thruhike brings those qualities it’s not hard to find walking a path monotonous.

The situations that thru-hiking puts you in is what I find adventous- on trail and off.

On trail we have experienced snow, rain, sun and blazing hot. We’ve night hiked with rustling sounds that make us yell out “Hey Bear” until we can’t walk any more. We’ve walked through lightening storms and been huddled into a shelter with over 30 people. We’ve had really low mileage days (5) and really high mileage days (38) but non-the-less it’s been anything and everything but typical.

Off trail we have only been a few places. We stopped in Hiawassee for a resupply and also in Nantahala to avoid some strong storms. We’ve treated ourselves to good food (but honestly it’s anything is good when you’re going stoveless) and we’ve stayed at some interesting places.

We have yet to find a crowd that goes our pace so we’re lacking in the “trail family” category. HOWEVER! The people we have been meeting this far have been super awesome.

I think the beauty with the trail is that you can make it as wild as you want. Everyone does it different but those who do it wrong don’t realize how easy it is to turn it into your dream adventure.

So far so fun and this is just the beginning….
