Grand Beginnings in the First Few Days

Right from the start of the approach trail there’s a massive set of stairs up Amicalola Falls, just to test if you’re really willing to commit to what you’re about to do. From there, I didn’t find the terrain much of a challenge and ended up making Springer Mountain at 1:30 p.m., the site of the first of many Snickers stops. To end that day, I made camp at 4:30 p.m. and was done eating and ready for bed at 5:45 p.m. I know, crazy early, right? But in all seriousness I felt a put in my stomach that first night when I got to camp because I have never been good at goodbyes. So in saying goodbye to my brother and father earlier that day, it was so easy at the time but I’ve gotta admit, I’m gonna miss those goons.

Now on to the second day. Once I made Woody Gap I encountered my first little batch of trail magic, some cookies and a Coke. Plus there was a much-needed bathroom. Met some other thru-hikers there but they were continuing on. What I had failed to notice on Bella, however, was a site of chafing under her right armpit, and I immediately felt terrible, like I had just disappointed the one who I was wholly responsible for. I’ll have to carry her weight for the foreseeable future. I don’t mind it at all as long as she’s alright.

Most recently we have our third day, where I hiked to the first hostel I’ve yet to come across. Last night was tough psychologically for me, but my brother was there to help me through it. The hike up and over Blood Mountain was tiring, but nothing I haven’t experienced before. Getting caught behind a family going 0.1 mph was kinda a bummer though. Settling into the hostel now, where I picked up a hot pizza for $8. What a deal!

Day one: Started at Amicalola Falls approach and made a 16.2-mile day.

Day two: 13.2-mile day. Woke up at 5:30 a.m., made Woody Gap by 3:15 p.m.

Day three: 11.3-mile day. Woke up at 7 a.m., got on trail by 8:30 a.m., over Blood Mountain and into the Walasi-yi  hostel. Bella and I got a hot shower, restocked slightly, and ate a hot meal.

Signing off for now. Wish us luck.
