Hiker Dies on Appalachian Trail in White Mountains

A 52-year-old Massachusetts man died on Tuesday while hiking in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. New Hampshire Fish and Game was notified at 2:14 p.m. on Tuesday of a hiker having an emergency between the summits of North and South Peaks on the Kingsman Ridge Trail, which is also the Appalachian Trail.

The man had been hiking to the summit of South Peak with his family and was roughly four miles from the nearest trailhead at the time of the emergency, making a rapid emergency response difficult.

Due to the severity of the emergency, the New Hampshire Army National Guard also responded to the incident with a Blackhawk helicopter, as did personnel from the Appalachian Mountain Club’s nearby Lonesome Lake Hut and conservation officers and volunteers from the Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue Team.

Medics from the NH Army National Guard Blackhawk team were able to reach the distressed hiker at 3:55 PM and continued using life-saving measures that family members and other Good Samaritan hikers had started. Unfortunately, while being transported down to an awaiting ambulance, the hiker succumbed to his medical emergency.

The man’s identity has not been released to the public yet.

Less than a two-hour response time for the rescue personnel is pretty impressive. Sad to hear the hiker didn’t make it.

Interesting, but unfortunately not uncommon. Kudos to rescue response folk. They are our trail heroes. I think knowing what the emergency was would be helpful for readers. Also the conditions contributing to the emergency. It’s hard to know how to avoid an emergency situation if you don’t know the factors involved.
