Hiker Found Dead on Springer Mountain Identified

A man who was found dead on Georgia’s Springer Mountain in late January has finally been identified, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) announced on Monday. The remains were identified as belonging to Stephen Lucas Ryan, 41, of Pennsylvania.

Ryan’s remains were discovered on the Benton Mackaye Trail near the summit of Springer Mountain in Fannin County, GA on January 21st, 2022. On April 2nd, GBI sought help from the public to identify Ryan based on an artist’s sketch and photos of clothing and items that were found on his person.

“Thank you to those that shared information to help identify the hiker,” GBI said in a written statement on Monday. Ultimately, the Bureau said the identification was a joint effort between themselves, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs).
