Journey to the trail

As I write this post I am sitting in a hotel in Ellijay, GA enjoying modern conveniences for one last night. Tomorrow morning I’ll head for Amicalola Falls state park and begin the Appalachian Trail!

The journey down to the trail has been memorable as I bid farewell to Wisconsin for 5 plus months and contemplate the reality of my decision to hike the trail .  After 12 or so hours driving we stopped in Fall Creek Falls state park in Tennessee.  We only spent a few hours checking this place out but it is an awesome place to visit I hope to be back someday, picture above is from the park.

With time to spare in Ellijay today we made it up US forest service road 42 for a short hike up to Springer Mtn. Nothing like a last minute gear test.  The day was rainy and gloomy but my was excitement was growing to hit the trail. After visiting with a group of thru hikers at the springer shelter, some of which had packs that weighed over 50 lbs, it was back to town for one last meal.

Time to support the Badgers in the title game and pack my backpack one last time. On Wisconsin!
