No Introduction, No Thru-Hike

I guess I better introduce myself so I can do this thru-hike. Is that how it works? My name is Scott Farley and I am a thru-hiker class of 2017. This is my starting point with you guys and I want to share who I am so you can better understand me.

I do stand-up comedy because I love to laugh and make others laugh. I have always been one to say things so crazy that it was guaranteed to get a laugh. I am more of a one liner type of guy and love the style of comedian Mitch Hedberg.  I have performed all over Virginia, Washington D.C., Georgia, Tennessee and New York City. It is such a rush when you make a room full of strangers laugh. I always try to find the humor in everything even during my worst days.

I am an 8-year Marine Corps Veteran and a Veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan. I was a Sergeant in the Marines and driving trucks was my job. In Iraq and Afghanistan, we carried supplies to the infantry on the front lines. We hit IED’s, took small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades (RPG) coming in at us but we still got everything delivered and made it back. I am determined and will complete what is in front of me.

I love to ride motorcycles. The freedom that it provides is just awesome. I have two Harley Davidson bikes. One is a sporty bike for when I feel the need for speed. The other is for distance or just cruising. Riding is one thing that I will definitely miss doing while on the trail.

Well of course I have to hike as well and have some kind of love for it. I hike mostly at Shenandoah National Park in Virginia including on the Appalachian Trail. I love being in nature because it takes away the stresses of life and gives me a feeling of peace.

I am ready to start this journey of thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail. I look forward to meeting new people and making new friends. If you need a laugh hunt me down. I will be somewhere between Georgia and Maine on a trail carrying a pack with two stick thingies being used like canes.

What reason am I really thru-hiking the AT? I am glad you asked and I will explain that in my next post.
