OH MY GEAR.

Today will be spent looking at gear. AJ and I will be online and browsing through stores nearby looking for a tent, bags, water treatment system, first aid kit, etc. Right now we don’t have anything and we’re ready to go. Originally, we were supposed to leave on July 12th. However, recent events have lead us to decide we will leave as soon as we have our gear. So hopefully we’ll find everything we need today so we can leave within the next week or two.

For so long I’ve pushed AJ to wait until we have all of the most perfect gear. I was trying to do everything by the book. I did research day in and day out and got all of these silly notions in my head that we need a bunch of things to keep us safe on the trail. As it turns out, all we need is a few necessities and a lot of faith.

We (humans) aren’t on this Earth to do what we’ve been doing. These jobs we’ve all been doing are pointless (with exclusion of some farmers.) Television and social media is pointless. These are all things created to keep us in submission. AJ and I have been blessed to be rid of the idea that we have to live by societal standards to live. We’re putting a lot of faith in God to keep us safe and guide us on this journey. The Appalachian Trail is only the beginning for us. Like I said before, it isn’t just a vacation – it’s a new beginning. We want to live out there. We want to live among trees and away from humanity.

Just an FYI, you can do it, too.

“Television and social media is pointless.” It’s easy to critique these things because much of it may seem pointless. But please keep in mind that these things can be life changing and inspiring too. Because of wildlife documentaries I saw on television as a child, I have gone into the field of wildlife conservation (is this one of the pointless jobs? Perhaps in the grandest of idealistic schemes I would agree, but not in the world we live in). Because of social media, this blog of yours exists (blogs are definitely a form of social media). Indeed this whole site is a conglomeration of helpful blogs to the aspiring hiker.
