On Being Lucky

Luck: the things that happen to a person because of chance; the accidental way things happen without being planned

– Merriam Webster Dictionary

If luck is defined as having good things happen to you without you asking for them or making them happen, then I have been the luckiest person so far. The weather for this hike could not have been more beautiful, and I’ve already met some of the most incredible people. Every day continues to fill me with the resolve that I made the right decision to come hike out here. Yes, I know there will be bad days, days that I feel down and hopeless, but for now (and for the past two and a half weeks), I’ve had nothing but amazing days. Even in the rain. Even in the snow.

Since Neel Gap I’ve gotten caught in an epic rainstorm, cowboy camped under the stars on a bald, seen a 360 degree sunset, been snowed on, caught up with old friends, and continued to meet even more amazing people.

Aside from the dictionary definition, I think that luck can also be something you experience because you are open to it. By coming into new experiences with an open mind and an open heart, you improve your chances of being able to appreciate the great times you encounter. To me, that’s lucky.

What is luck to you? Let me know in the comments.
