Stop: Moxie Bald Mountain Lean-to
I’m Outta Town…the Nero and Zero were almost too much! It was time to go after eating and eating and EATING! While it was a much needed rest after the 100 Mile Wilderness, it could have just as well been the long Nero! But don’t get me wrong I ENJOYED the down time off the trail.
The planned destination was Horseshoe Canyon Lean-to, but arrived there by 11:30am — that’s under 4 hours since we didn’t get dropped off at the trailhead on ME15 until 7:40am.
With the entire afternoon ahead of us and feeling pretty good after the town rest, we decided to push on…not to the next shelter but hopefully a stealth campsite along the next river crossing.
We stopped at the lean-to for lunch. Hey, checkout a new lunch…
While getting to lunch was very quick, I turned my ankle, but AGAIN…that makes 6 times since arriving in Maine….just feet from stopping. Ouch! Also, I’m still having a few blister issues. In particular, my tiny toe on my left foot. I taped it today with the 3M Nexcare, but it only “relocated” the blister to the very end of the toe. I hope this blister thing STOPS! very soon.
Let’s double down and go 18 miles instead of the planned 9. That means we DID go all the way to the next shelter!
Now, I’m ready for bed…
The trail was very gentle today. A nice path most of the way…slightly sloping upward to here, but nothing too tough. Thos included 3 rivers to cross. Two required me to ford in my Crocs and the last one was a rock hopper.
It was a beautiful sunny day for the hike…a gorgeous day to be out on the trail…maybe even a little too warm. Now, as I lay here readying myself for sleep, the clouds have accumulated and it has begun to rain. I guess I should have stayed in the shelter…because tomorrow I wil have a wet tent to contend with! Oh well, that’s part of backcountry hiking along the AT.
Tomorrow it’s over Moxie Bald Mountain and Pleasant Pond Mountain. Hopefully, it’s a short day…maybe 13.1 miles to the Pleasant Pond Shelter. That will put me at AT mile marker 600! A nice way to finish the day.
