Pfft!  What was that?  Connecticut!

With only about 50 miles, Connecticut went by fast. It was a beautiful state with many gentle hills. A lot of up and down, but none of it severe or long.

We spent a lot of time walking along the Housatonic River, which is pretty spectacular in this section. Great Falls is something to behold. There is a detour at this point because they are rebuilding Iron Bridge. The detour is a 3 mile road walk. We had planned to go into Falls Village, but that meant a 3 mile road walk, 3 miles back to Falls Village, and the 3 mile back to the end of the detour. We looked at illegally fording the river (it was significant, but nothing we hadn’t dealt with in Maine) but the site was swarming with construction workers and there were no trespassing signs.

So we resigned ourselves to missing Fall Village when a guy pulled up and asked us if we wanted a ride around the detour. He took us to the Toy Makers Cafe. So we ate lunch there (cool place!) and the picked up the “real” AT just the other side of the bridge! Sometimes the Trail just provides!

The next stretch was a long river walk. Flat and level trail along the Housatonic. This went by quickly except for a brief swimming interlude. We skipped visiting Kent and spent the night in the Mt Algo Shelter.

The end of the next day found us in Pawling, New York.
If I had to pick one word to describe Connecticut, it would be – buggy. It was hot and the insects were out in force. I have no problem with mosquitoes. They basically leave me alone. But I am a magnet for the gnats that want to fly into your eyes. I ended up wearing my head net through most of the state, which of course only made me hotter.
Hydration was an ongoing challenge. I think we were drinking 4 liters during the day and I still wasn’t peeing. One time we found a well pump at the 10 Mile Shelter. This water was ice cold and delicious.

Before we knew it, we had hit the New York border and were walking toward Pawling. The next stop is a side trip to Manhattan to visit Mark in Greenwich Village. I know, after the tough time I had at the Phish concert, I’m braving Manhattan and the New York subway. I’m a slow learner…..
