Snow, Solitude, and Shelters

Well, I’m back with a brief update. Nothing fancy as I’m rushing this in during a hostel stay.

It’s been cold. There’s been snow and ice and wind — anything you can imagine pairing with the word winter. However, my quilt has been holding up really well and I haven’t frozen to death yet. So good news there.

I also got to stay at the famous Overmountain Shelter, which is a refurbished barn. I spent a cold night there but it didn’t stop me from appreciating the beauty of the location, and the novelty of the shelter itself.

And I’ve spent several nights alone this week, camping and in shelters. It’s been nice to have that time to myself, to be able to think and make all my own plans. Something about getting away from people has a calming effect.

On the flip side, this time people are actually going in my direction. In November I’d meet people and never see them again, but now there are maybe a solid five people moving north at the same speed, in about the same area as myself. So the company I do have has been lovely. I’m beginning to really understand what people mean when they talk about a trail community.

I wish I could share pictures of the snow I’ve had the past few days but I truly was more interested in dealing with it than taking pictures. And then my phone died before I got around to getting a nice shot. Maybe next time I’ll have pictures.

All in all, a good start to this second leg of my journey. I’m glad for the break I’ve had today, but excited to hit the trail again tomorrow.

Take care everyone,

Eliza

Good ol’ Overmountain Shelter. I met my best trail pals there.
