I’ve Started the Trek to My Long Walk

Today I started my trek to start my trek. After almost two years of planning the past week has been chaotic to say the least. The past four days have been spent at doctor appointments getting injections in various places on this old man’s body.

This morning was the last one, with one last cortisone injection in an ankle. Then back home to finish packing the car. I am very excited to start this long walk home. I would be lying if I said I was relaxed and calm. This week I said goodbye to many friends and have gotten the support of all those friends. But in the end I’m the one taking those steps.

Off to Branson, Mo.

So it is with much anticipation we hop into the car to travel to Branson, Mo., to visit with our two Air Force kids to spend Christmas in February with them.

Then on Feb. 28 I will ride to Amicalola Falls to make this whole thing real. I have been very fortunate to be self-employed,  to be able to save the money needed for this journey, and to be able to make the decision to leave my very comfortable home and bed for the next five to six  months. But it is a decision that will ultimately lead to some mental peace I have been seeking.

I want to close this post by thanking all of my friends who have been so very helpful and supportive throughout this journey, as well as their donations to my veterans suicide-awareness fundraising. It brought tears to my eyes with many of the donations and gifts. To everyone, and you know who you are, a very sincere thank you. You are all in my heart as I make this walk, and maybe I will see some of you when I get closer. I look forward to hiking with you. Although I will probably be much thinner, have a longer beard, and smell awful, it will be a wonderful time.

I would also like to thank Zach for inviting me to write this blog for The Trek, and to my food sponsor,  Blackdogsurplus.net.

Peace to all.
