Unidentified Body Found on Katahdin
An unidentified person was found dead on Katahdin on Monday, September 14, according to Maine’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. An autopsy is underway to determine the individual’s identity and cause of death, but no further details have been released at this time.
Katahdin is Maine’s tallest peak and marks the northern end of the Appalachian Trail. The 5,269-foot peak in Baxter State Park is known for unpredictable weather conditions, particularly in the shoulder season and winter, and for its strenuous terrain. Prior to this incident, the last fatalities on Katahdin were Tim and Esther Keiderling, a father and daughter who died on the mountain last June amid harsh wintry conditions.
