This Week’s Top Instagram Posts from the #AppalachianTrail

It’s been a long and lonely winter. But as inevitably as rain on a day you put on clean socks, February has given way to March and Appalachian Trail thru-hiking season is upon us. A few hardy folks are already out hiking and blessing our Instagram feeds with the good stuff, so welcome back to our weekly roundup of the most spectacularly beautiful, hilariously entertaining, and all-around best photos taken on the Appalachian Trail this past week.

This week features photos taken from March 4 to holy-crap-some-people-started-in-January?  and were found by perusing the hashtag #TrektheAT. A thorough point-based grading system is used to pluck out the very best for your viewing pleasure. As always, dog photos are always favored.

“Did you see my bike?” An odd opening question when I walked into Brian’s apartment the first time. “I did. Why?” It was a weird thing to ask, no? “Well… umm.. I really just wanted to know if you were an outdoorsy kind of person.” Three weeks later, we bought a tent. As I reached the Approach Trail today, I was reminded of all the trails leading to this point. The family trips to Theodore Roosevelt National Park instead of Europe or the Caribbean. The hundreds of miles Brian and I crossed as we got to know one another. The steps we took along the Inca Trail to begin our marriage. And the terrifying walk down the aisle on the day of his funeral. I consider all this as I prepare to begin my hike tomorrow. There is no guarantee of the outcome, only that there will be ups and downs, vistas and valleys. #marchforth #trektheat #at2019 #whiteblazes

Day 9: Wed, Feb 6 Muskrat Creek Shelter to Carter’s Gap Shelter, 12.5 miles, 93.5 miles total . Blowdown Wednesday!! Woke up about 6:00 in my tent feeling refreshed. Waiting for it to get light and it started raining. Donned the rain gear and broke camp in the rain. Headed out on the trail but quickly ditched the rain jacket in favor of a t-shirt in the light, warm rain. This lasted for maybe an hour until the wind kicked up and the on-off rain turned to full on. Spent 6+ hours hiking in the rain to reach tonight’s shelter. . As I said it was all about blowdowns. Hardest 12.5 miles I could imagine because every 20’ you had to climb over, limbo under, of just plain go off-trail and climb around fallen trees. The maintenance volunteers could not be out during the gov’t shutdown because their insurance is provided by the USFS. Therefore, they’re way behind on keeping the trail clear. . Glad to be in a shelter tonight on a rainy, foggy night in the woods. There’s a woman here with me that is part of the NC organization of trail runners. The good news is she reported the trail ahead of me for tomorrow is clear. . Pics: 1) A foggy, rainy start to the day, 2) That’s the trail through all those branches. There’s another 100 pictures like this from my hike today. . #at2019thruhike #at2019 #appalachiantrail #TrektheAT #thruhike #MotownAT

Hike 10/52 Mile 51.7/300 171ft of elevation gain Pretty much all of my plans for the weekend fell through, but I did go to #ATKO and get to spend time surrounded by trail family. I intended to hike the AT approach trail in its entirety on Saturday, but I woke up with the plague (otherwise known as the common cold). I barely had the energy to get out of bed, much less hike almost 9 miles. After spending most of the day hydrating like crazy, napping, and consuming more than my share of Yerba Mate, I finally got up enough energy to do a 1 mile loop around the state park and see the waterfalls. Leave it to the #appalachiantrail to always remind you that your plans don’t matter. . . . . . #52hikechallenge #takemetothemountains #findyourtrail #gastateparks #publiclandowner #at2019 #longdistancehiking #waterfallsfordays #chasingwaterfalls #georgiahikers #wandernorthga #trektheAT #appalahiantrials #amicalolafalls #getyourassintonature #optoutside #getoutthere #getoutmoretour #gooutsideandplay #outtherepodcast #getoutstayout #trailsyall #myblueridge #longexposure #iphonephotography #outsideRX #trailtherapy #withguthook
