This Week’s Top Instagram Posts from the #AppalachianTrail

Welcome to the weekly roundup of the best Instagram hiker trash and treasures on the Appalachian Trail.

August is here, which means thru-hikers are feeling their trail legs and cruising through the end-of-summer heat and skeeters, or starting to wind down after many thousands of miles (as if New Hampshire and Maine feel like winding down).

This week’s photos were taken from August 14 to August 27 after careful selection from the #TrektheAT hashtag.

AT Thru Hike | Day 136 | August 13th | Daily Miles: 11.2 | Total Miles: 1,973.4 Sabbath Day Pond Lean-to >> Piazza Rock Lean-to Today turned out to be a shorter day than I think we were all expecting. Tex, Rastus and I broke camp around 7, heading around 10 miles to the next road crossing then down a ways to a hostel that Tex had a few boxes sent to. When we got to the road, we met Rose, a 2019 NOBO Thru Hiker who’d finished the trail a week earlier, already back doing trail magic in the parking lot, so we hung out there with some of the other folks we’d spend the night with. From there, we headed to grab Tex’s boxes from the hostel and @dixiebutler1971 – my t-shirt twin from back at Rattle River Hostel – and his daughter were there. Catching onto our resupply plans, he tossed his car keys to me to take his truck to town instead of hitching – which made the trip incredibly easy for us. We hit the outfitter, grabbed pizza for lunch, then hit the grocery store, then headed back to trail to wrap up the last few miles of our day, cozying up to the edge of the Saddleback ridge. Today was a shorter day than I’d hoped, but at 4pm we’d have had to put on 7+ miles across a ridge to get to a shelter or tent site, so we pulled the pin early and relaxed. Thorn: Definitely the short day, but we made the most of it, and I figure I’ll be wishing I’d slowed down and enjoyed things once I finish, so it’s bittersweet. I also didn’t take many photos today either. Rose: Two trail magics and the spoils of two hiker boxes made my resupply stop really light. It was a lot of fun to drive around honking at hikers we knew in town too. . . . . . #appalachiantrail #AT2019 #thruhiker #ATthruhiker2019 #GeorgiatoMaine #GAME #atclassof2019 #livingthedream #trektheAT #hiketheAT #getoutside #getoutdoors #livelifeoutside #findyouradventure #hikertrash #trailmagicjohnson #Maine

I have spent some pretty spectacular days in the mountains the last month. Hiking over 500 km and thousands of meters up and down. I do eat a lot on the trail and I have managed to find some really good dinner tables with mountain views and panoramic scenery. I eat almost one freeze dried meal a day and add some extra calories with olive oil, freeze dried eggs, peanutbutter or soybeans. Thanks to Barbie (@mrantonisse ) and Baco (@sebastiankierk ) for helping out take some of the pictures of me. Most of my pictures are shot with the sony6000 alpha using a tamron 28 mm vintage lens. #sonya6000 #vintagelens #appalaciantrail #appalaciantrail2019 #atclassof2019 #trektheat #eatingontrail #trekandeat #primus #snowpeak #whitemountainsnh #hyperlightmountaingear #enlightenedequipment

Yesterday I hit the trail again after a nero and a zero in Gorham. The weather was perfect and I had a few errands to run before heading out to the trailhead so I got a bit late before I started and I ended out night hiking the last two miles the views was breathtaking as the sun set behind the White mountains and today I saw my first black bear, didn’t get a picture though. I feel lucky! ? I hope the luck continues because they expect rain tomorrow and we are supposed to go up Mt Washington. Wish me more luck!

Day 152 // 20.2 miles // total: 1982 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It was a simple day. This morning was mostly flat. However there were more roots and mud then Vermont and New Hampshire combined. We got to a parking lot and were immediately greeted by some trail magic from a supported sobo hiker and Don (hiker name Mad Rat) who is a hopeful AT thru hiker and future hostel owner. Don was a sweet man and almost had everything a hiker could ever need. He proudly wore his Appalachian Trail shirt as he and his son were eager to help in any way they could. We were able to mostly restock at the trail magic but still had to go into town. Don offered to drive us to Rangley in his rental car, no problem. We got in and out of town within in a hour(record time), managing to go to the local IGA for protein bars and the post office for my new shoes! Thank you so much Don! When we got back we headed up Saddleback mountain with full bellies and packs. It was an easy going ascent as Sheriff and I listened to the Moth Radio hour podcast. We then cleared the tree line and ridge walked on Saddleback for several miles. Guthooks said once at the summit you could see both Washington and Katahdin on a clear day. Sheriff thought he could see Mount Washington but as for as Katahdin we were out of luck due to us not knowing what to look for. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I typically listen to music, podcasts or audiobooks for most my day of hiking. It’s nice to be able to zone out and let the miles fly. Besides the one hour Sheriff and I listened together, I decided to just enjoy the day and be present in my thoughts without my phone. Sadly we recently had to leave half our trail family due to our differing time constraints. So naturally it’s been quieter out here without them. Today it was nice, I listened to my steps, song birds, Sheriffs grunts as he stubs his toes, but mostly silence. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It was a simple, silent, sweet day of hiking. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #AppalachianTrail #TrekTheAT #AT2019 #thruhike #backpacking #thetrek #camping #greatoutdoorprovisioncompany #longdistancehike #adventurecouple #youtuber #optoutside #appalachiantrailvlog #appalachiantrail2019
