And now back to our regularly scheduled programming… We have been nothing but opportunistic this year, diverging away from sticking to one story, one plan. The unpredictability can be stressful at times, trust us when we say we like the organizational comfort of a good plan (at least one of us does), but this year is not about that. After an amazing few weeks out West, we have returned to the Appalachian Mountains. The trail is much quieter now, the air crisper. Darkness falls so so so much earlier but that’s ok. 3:15am. The alarm clock rings. I peel myself out of the hammock. And surprisingly it’s even warmer in the middle of the night than it was the day before. At 4am Viking and I start hiking up to the Saddleback Ridge with our headlamps. Strange incident: we saw a man sleeping in the middle of the trail and snoring loud. At 5am we did hit the tree line. And just in that moment the clouds cleared up@and we hiked under the stars and the bright shining moon. It was so bright that we didn’t need our flashlights! The trail was clearly visible and over the next two hours we experienced the most beautiful sunrise. It was so worth it to wait out the rain and get up early! We hiked on over Lone Mountain, bypassed Mount Abrahams, Spalding Mountain and Sugerloaf Mountain. At lunch we laid out all our food a did rations because we were running low. In the end we hiked that day 18.6 miles (29.9km), 6270 feet (1900hm) ascent and 5400 feet (1650hm) descent! This is the biggest day I have ever hiked. Eating my chips southbound ??‍♂️ . I took a shower in Pawling, NY near the CT border which was my first since North Adams, MA near the VT border. This was taken a few miles before DWG, PA where I did indeed take another shower; but hey, what’s a few hundred miles in between showers? . We do all we can to keep our shoes and clothes dry when it rains. On the AT we prefer not to use rain jackets and pants because we will sweat to hard. Instead of that we use rain ponchos that we throw over our heads and backpacks. If it rains just a little bit, we roll the ponchos up in front to get more ventilation. If it rains really hard, we use our hiking sticks to make a small roof to keep the shoes dry. Although today it rained really hard for a couple of hours and the rivers and trails started to flood. There was no way to keep our feet dry. For the first time we have seen what flash flooding is and how dangerous it can be. This is my go to queen! She always has the scoop, she lets me know in advance what is to come bc she always seems to find her way ahead of me. She accepted me and my diva qualities since day one, and shows nothing by respect for my needs. When I was off trail, I confided in her about my ideas of failure. She never accepted how I viewed my setback or injury as a failure and she always gave me hope. Thank you, Midnight or Cat for believing that we would hike together again in the most difficult terrain of Maine. She held me up with her spirit, she helped get me town when I was struggling with a fever and she stays in touch with me to make me feel supported and loved. I love you, girlfriend. I thru-hiked the Long Trail northbound in 2016, and caught a really debilitating bug for long distance hiking. I completed the AT in 2017 and a PCT LASH in 2019. While I am pursuing my PhD in Biomedical Sciences for the foreseeable future and having to postpone my Triple Crown plans, I do plan on tackling some of the shorter long trails across the U.S.
