Within ten hours, Maine became my favorite state: night hiking under the clearest biggest brightest sky I’ve ever seen (shooting star!); falling asleep in a near empty shelter to the calls of a lonely loon all night; four hours of sleep; pressing on at 4:30 am and running into a mama moose and baby moose (who was as scared of us as we were of it & cried for help! Everyone was scared! Mama, baby, and hikers!); a brilliant sunrise; a lake with a free canoe in the warm morning autumnal light; another moose encounter!; sliding into town on easy terrain with fall leaves littering the ground—feeling like we’ve feasted well & with our full hearts maybe we could take on the world. Maine is a cornucopia. My cup overflows.

Whatever your problem or challenge may be, laugh at it. Laugh long and hard. Because you are forever and it is temporary. • It is easy to say this now, when the moment is simple and I’m drinking a smoothie while watching morning cartoons with my niece. But a little over two weeks ago, I was 8 days without a shower, on my 27th out of 30th mile, caught in a 10 minute sideways rain storm, crying while walking barefoot with one sneaker in my hand because chafe. I certainly was not laughing. • I knew this moment would end, but I was in pain, tired and wished I hiked faster to miss the rain… and so my eyes competed with the sky to flood the ground. But you can sure as hell bet I laugh long and hard when I think back to this. • This also led to a hilarious and breezy day of hiking in undies, which created opportunity for lots of laughter. Acknowledging that each challenge can be seen as a step towards something wonderful, a reminder to embrace the journey and appreciate the highs and lows. • Temporary. This challenge. Blind to its fleeting life yet gifted a chance to practice perseverance. Monitor how seriously you take life, surrender to the moment, and laugh as often as possible.
