WELOVERMONT

Day 49

We took full advantage of the comforts the Inn had to offer.  This included morning coffee outside in the sun, a big breakfast, and a late check out at 11AM.  The Inn at Long Trail was a tough place to leave and we are already looking forward to our return.
Back on trail, the terrain in Vermont continued with a gentle, gradual climb up to Mount Killington, the last time we’ll be above 4000 feet of elevation until Virginia.  Our journey has taken us into the green tunnel and we rolled into camp around 5:30PM.
We enjoyed a restful night at camp.  Oh yeah, and in true shell-shock fashion, Hayley managed to fall out of the hammock.  We’re still not sure how she was able to pull that one off but luckily it wasn’t a far distance to the ground.
Day 50
We did our biggest day on trail, 19.7 miles.  This meant getting up early which is a lot more challenging when it’s still dark out.  It has been interesting to note the changes sunrise and sunset on trail. We just keep losing daylight a few minutes at a time until all of a sudden it’s much darker than you were expecting. The other challenge is putting on wet clothes while it’s dark and colder out. We are relieved the heat wave is over but that also means colder temps in the early morning. We’ll have to get used to this. We’ve also seen a few leaves change color, we are very excited for the season to come.
We started hiking a little after 7AM and then crushed miles.  Climbs that we once thought were challenging our now just part of our routine.  We don’t tire as easy or as quickly as we once did.  We hit 500 miles early this morning and patted ourselves on the back a bit. Also thought it was pretty cool hitting 500 on day 50.
We enjoyed the white rock sculptures along the trail and made camp near Little Rock Pond.  We are still seeing dozens of NOBOs daily on trail and continue to share information on the upcoming sections. We are looking forward to some of the upcoming things in Massachusetts and the mid Atlantic area.
To our surprise, we heard loons calling out in the evening again.  It reminded us of our time in Maine which now seems Ike ages ago.
Day 51
We awoke to more loon cries and were happy to hear them one more time. We headed out and enjoyed some terrain. We hit some ledges and had a nice view of the green mountains surrounding us. We easily made our way to Griffith Lake and were able to camel up (take extra water) at the brook by the shelter.
We were planning to camp on top of Bromley Mountain which doesn’t have a water source. With an extra 9 1/2 gallons of water we made the slow and steady 7 mile trek up to the summit.
The summit was very beautiful with 360 views (nice look at Killington way off in the distance.) There was a warming hut with electricity so we could recharge our phones (yay!) We set up our tent near the chair lift and enjoyed a nice sunset.  We definitely will have to return to Bromley Mountain later in life.

We relaxed and ate dinner on the chair lift while watching the lights in the valley appear.  When darkness enveloped us we enjoyed the brightest starry night so far on trail which included the Milky way.
