What’s Normal Anyway?

Why Am I Not “Normal?”

What’s going on, guys. I’m Carly and I’m a very confused 29-year-old woman. When we think of people living a normal life by age 30 you typically have a house, a growing family, and a blooming career (can you guess which one I have?). For some people none of that really seems that appealing.

Whether you have a sense of adventure or you are not just the settle down type, that’s fine. Don’t let anyone make you feel not “normal.” I have gone through life always feeling slightly out of place/ While all my friends were planning their dream weddings at age 16 I was reading books, and dreaming of traveling the world. I used to think that something was wrong with me or that I was broken, so I tried to force myself to go look at houses or look up engagement rings, but it never felt right to me (not currently, at least). Now here we are 2020. I have a great career, I have a loving family and boyfriend, and still something is missing.

Leaving It All Behind

Come April I’m leaving Upstate New York, quitting my job, and kissing my cats goodbye because I’m living out my dream of  thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail! I’m hoping the trail helps me deal with my anxiety in a healthy way, and shows me that there is still good in the world. I know it will be challenging but I am up for the task at hand. When the times get tough I will just remind myself that I could be sitting at my desk instead of hiking in the pouring rain.

Just Be Yourself!

At the end of the day you need to do what makes you happy, and fills your cup. People will say you are crazy, you aren’t normal, you have such a good job, why are you throwing it away, but when it comes down to it you aren’t just here to pay bills and die. Live the life you want and don’t conform to what society tells you is right, love what you do, and do it with passion. With that being said I’m lacing up my trail runners and hitting the trail. I don’t know what the AT will bring me but I’m sure ready for it!
