Ever since I was a little kid growing up in North Wales, I have loved to explore my neighborhood on foot. I remember going on voyages of discovery along the coastline of Cardigan Bay as far as my little legs would take me before the sun set and I had to get home. I took up running in my teens, twenties and thirties, and explored my new neighborhoods every time I moved with my family, to college and in the Air Force. I'm retired now, living in the Pacific Northwest, on the banks of the Columbia, and have no plans to move again. I guess I decided to make my neighborhood a little bit bigger! I ran marathons when I was younger, and my brain really hasn't kept up with my body. It still thinks I'm capable of doing crazy stuff like walking across the continent. We will see if the brain and the body are capable of having a civil discourse as I try to do a hundred marathons back to back this year. Or 200 half marathons? Or something in between? I'm curious to find out! When I retired, I joined a couple of local walking clubs with the American Volkssports Association (ava.org) and explored more of the local region in Oregon and Washington. It was during a regional walking conference in Ashland last June, 2022, that I first stepped foot on the Pacific Crest Trail and fell in love with this skinny little footpath. In my spare time, I'm a member of Toastmasters (toastmasters.org), an organization that helps people improve their communication and leadership skills, and I will be taking Toastmasters on a Hike with me this year, documenting my experience so I can do a better job of sharing the lessons I've learned with others when I get home. Ping me if you're interested in learning more.
