I just graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and am thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2025! I decided to thru-hike the AT in 11th grade and have been planning this for seven years. I did my time in school and now have my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering from one of the most rigorous technical universities in the country. I am stoked to spend five months of my life outdoors traversing the Appalachian mountains this year! Follow me on Instagram @themountainengineer

Making my dream come true!
Hiking through my home state of New Jersey made me remember that I am realizing a dream that I’ve had for a long time. In years past, I hiked these mountains dreaming about linking them all together on a complete thru hike. And now I am here doing it! I also spent Father’s Day weekend at home with family, eating lots of food and giving my body rest.

Out of Virginia
I’m out of Virginia! This section was mentally the most challenging at the start; as I returned to the trail and dealt with my worst weather of the entire hike. I persevered through, and am so glad that I am still pushing northward. I hiked through Shenandoah National Park for over 100 miles, and arrived into the (almost) halfway town of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia!
Mind Over Matter
I reached a breaking point this week. I got sick and had to be evacuated from the AT. Read about how I am bouncing back in this post.

Have fun with it!
Erwin to Damascus was my favorite section of trail! I got so many different flavors of the trail: climbing snow-covered peaks, watching a full solar cycle on a bald in the Roan Highlands, and camping on the shore of a lake, to name a few.
Mountains as a place for healing
In this section I had some of the best views and trail magic of my hike so far, and made progress towards overcoming a personal challenge.
