Kaela "Pizza" Wilbur

In civilized society I go by Kaela, but on trail people know me as Pizza. I am 27 years old and currently live in Covington, Kentucky (which is essentially Cincinnati, Ohio). I have a degree in Environmental Science, but so far my “career” has involved traveling the country taking any convenient job that involves grunt labor and nature…. and then running away on a thru hike. Most recently, I’ve been working as a horticultural technician at a greenhouse. As of this past November, I am married to my man-wife Jake. Together, we have two furry cat children, Oli and Jessicat (who Jake will be watching during this hike). I started thru-hiking in 2018 when I hiked the Appalachian Trail, and I have been backpacking ever since, including having thru-hiked the Long Trail (Vermont), the Lone Star Trail (Texas), the Arctic Circle Trail (Greenland), the O-Circuit (Chile), and Te Araroa (New Zealand). This year my dad and I will be attempting a flip-flop thru-hike of the International Appalachian Trail!

Don’t Cry Over Spilt Spam: Maryland on the Appalachian Trail

I just spent one season ridgerunning before moving on to another job, but because of my experience in Maryland, it holds a special place in my heart (I think I’ve hiked the section about 13 times?). Part of the reason I wanted to start at Harper’s Ferry was so that our slowest days would be spent somewhere familiar- I was excited to see how old places had changed and to show my dad what my life was like during the summer I spent in Maryland.

Flip-flopping the International Appalachian Trail

Last July, my dad told me he was going to hike the AT in 2026 and asked if I’d come with him... I hit my dad with a crazy counterproposal: what if we hiked the International Appalachian Trail (IAT) instead?

How I Became a Thru-Hiker (and Brought my Dad along for the Ride)

How I Became a Thru-Hiker (and Brought my Dad along for the Ride)

When I was little, I would look at powerlines and wonder how far they went. I imagined if you followed them they would just keep going and going and eventually you would walk past every town with electricity. The concept of length was what captured my imagination: long, winding roads that went off into the distance, rivers that flow away to…somewhere. So now imagine my absolute delight when I stumbled upon long distance hiking trails at the age of 12.
