Serious practice hike: the West Highland Way
As we unpacked our bags, we discovered that neither of our rain covers for our bags had worked and all our stuff was wet. My sleeping bag was dripping wet, and Roo’s was pretty damp too. We wondered what to do but we were too far from anywhere, and it was too late, so we knew we had to just get through the night.

We managed to hike 50 miles in 3 days but it was a bit ambitious considering we hadn't really had time to train and at the end of August, the weather was pretty hot. We made though and we had fun, despite the constant up and downs of the downs. At seven sisters park (white cliffs on the south coast), it turns out that there are in fact 8 big hills to be climbed and descends. So now we call them the 8 bastards, instead of the 7 sisters.
Hi, I’m Laura (a little back story)
I thought I should introduce myself. I'm Laura (she/her). I'm 35 and I live with my husband, Roo, in a little city in the east of England called Norwich. It's famous for Colman's mustard, Norwich City Football club, Stphen Fry, and Delia Smith. Hopefully you've heard of one of them, but it's a pretty small city so you could be forgiven if not.
What on earth possessed me to stop working and attempt to walk 2000+ miles across 14 states?!
I don't think I ever feel more liberated and generally excellent than when I set off for a walk with everything I need on my back, even if it's just for a walk on a day off in the Norfolk countryside. So the idea of spending months at a time like this is so inviting. We're always careful to say that we are going to TRY to hike the AT, knowing that it's not going to be easy.
