Hi, I’m Rebecca from Louisville, Ky. I’m thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail starting late April 2025. The last year has been a big one for me – my only son graduated high school and joined the Marine Corps, I entered midlife with a number of trips around the sun that rhymes with shorty, my dad concluded his travels on this Earth, and I sold my house and resigned from a marketing job where I led a team of over 20. What better way to face my latest existential questions than a good, long trek in the woods? A writer at heart, it seems fitting to share this adventure, though I have a feeling it will be hard to do the experience justice with words. I’ll do my best! I’ll try not to philosophize too much, but I can promise plenty of self-deprecation and being overly precious about moments of awe.

Morning is my favorite time on the trail. Woodland birds come alive with song, there's a soft, filtered light that eases through the tree cover, and the worries of the night before are lessened with the hope of a new day. After a worrisome night, that's how I started my second day on trail.

I'm rebranding my midlife crisis as a midlife reality check. The sentiment is the same - let's blow up life as I know it to see what being alive is all about. And let's do it by hiking the Appalachian Trail.
