Welcome to my MasterChef’s kitchen, where I'll be cooking articles from our AT journey. I am originally from the Czech Republic, but my love for mountains brought me to British Columbia, Canada where my husband and I moved from the Czech Republic shortly after our wedding. The Mountains of the West Coast were simply magical, and we could never have enough. Around that time, we discovered the PCT, over four-thousand-kilometres-long trail from Mexico to Canada. Growing up in a small country like the Czech Republic, the length of the trail was unimaginable to us. So we have to try it, and we successfully finished in 2019. And yes, it changed our lives. It happens often, and we are not exception. I became MasterChef and my husband became Fuego to our hiking family & friends. Thru-hiking became a huge part of our lives. After the PCT, we hiked CDT in 2022, and this year we are finishing our Triple Crown. I have shared our journeys in two books and many articles in Czech language, and now, for the first time I have the chance to share our story in English as well. Be ready for not always perfect grammar here, lots of fun, sarcasm, and marriage life on the trail. Wish us luck, and I hope we enjoy this journey together, because shared pain is always smaller, and joy multiplies.

Mice, Squirrels and One Very Hungry Husband
A month in and 300 miles done, the trail feels both fast and endless. The start was painful, but new shoes turned everything around, and now the body is getting stronger and miles are coming easier. Life on trail has found its rhythm with hiker hunger, waking spring, and constant battles with mice and loud squirrels. Compared to past trails, this one feels less wild but more social, with an incredible community. It’s not always comfortable, but it’s simple, and that’s where the happiness is.
AT Weather and Terrain Is No Joke
Early on the Appalachian Trail, we experienced extreme and rapidly changing weather. Rain, freezing temperatures, and even snow within days. One of the hardest nights was a violent storm with strong winds shaking our tent and lightning lighting it up like a strobe, leaving us awake and uneasy but pushing through.
Our Appalachian Trail Thru-Hike Didn’t Go as Planned From Day One
After years of dreaming about the Appalachian Trail, we expected the adventure to start with excitement, fresh legs, and the thrill of finally being on trail. Instead, our thru-hike began with an unexpected detour back to town.
