Backpacker Radio 66 | Drunk Q&A with Badger & Chaunce

Backpacker Radio is making good on their promise to get weird.  Today we bring you a drunk Q&A.  Backpacker Radio’s new intern, Elise Ott (hi, that’s me), navigates us through a series of questions, including COVID-19, how we’re handling the self-quarantining, a lot of poop related subjects, thru-hiking purism, and much more.  At the top of the show, one of Chaunce’s friends gives us the poop story to end all poop stories.  This one is our most feral podcasts to date.  Because that’s what you do during an apocalypse.

On display, as always, is the on-air chemistry between Zach and Chaunce, with a couple of nice adds in Casey (born storyteller) and Elise.

A million things to potentially comment on, but here are a few….

I don’t usually use the term “thru-hiker” because it is so fuzzy. “Long-distance hiker” is much cleaner.

BTW, I agree with Zach that at some level, if anyone is going to be a “purist,” you have to be rigid about what that means. Without bringing up issues such as “Did you carry your pack the whole way?” it seems to me that the only actualy “purist” is someone who literally walked past every single blaze on a given trail, with perhaps some leeway for official closures (I found it kind of funny when I was hiking the AT in 2016 and the ATC “officially” notified hikers that they would still be eligible as “2,000-mile” hikers if they took the fire detours … almost like a priest granting absolution). As soon as you miss one blaze, then where do you draw the line?

That said, “purism” is, or should be, a personal goal, and not something brandished like a weapon or worn as a badge of honor to one-up someone who made a different choice. IMO, of course.

Miss Janet, a person I trust when it comes to AT lore, told me that locals in NH pronounce it “Moo-sih-lock,” not “Moo-sih-laki.”

A very large percentage of the world’s humans thinks that Western “dry wiping” is disgusting and unsanitary; they use hands, water and hand-washing. One famous hiker, Nimblewill Nomad, told me he doesn’t bother packing TP and just uses a little water.

Zach, I’ve never heard you sound quite so … buzzed.

    Fun episode, as always.
