HMG Windrider UL Backpack

Sale: $279 – $295 | Reg.: $349 – $369 | You save: $70 – $74

  • Weight:
    • 40L white pack: 29.9 oz
    • 40L black pack: 32.4 oz
  • Materials:
    • White pack: 50d Dyneema Composite Hybrid (DCH)
    • Black pack: 150d DCH

The Windrider is one of HMG’s most iconic thru-hiking packs. Its streamlined profile has graced many a long trail over the years, and it’s easy to understand why. The pack’s primary material is Dyneema Composite Hybrid (DCH), an ultralight, waterproof, and highly abrasion-resistant fabric. HMG tapes the seams, making this as close to a fully waterproof pack as you’ll ever find. As an added bonus, seam taping also serves to reinforce the seams, boosting the pack’s overall durability.

HMG Windrider vs. Southwest vs. Junction: The Windrider is identical to the HMG Southwest and Junction backpacks except for the external pocket material. The Windrider uses 100% mesh for the roomy back pocket and side water bottle holders, which saves weight and improves ventilation. These pockets are a great place to dry wet rain jackets and tents during the day.

The HMG Southwest uses solid Hardline with Dyneema fabric for all the external pockets, which is a great choice for rugged hikes where you’re worried about snagging. Meanwhile, the Junction compromises between the two, using Hardline with Dyneema for the side bottle pockets and mesh for the rear pocket.

Of all the thru-hiking accessories, the humble fanny pack is surely the greatest. You need this.

HMG Bottle Pocket

Sale: $31.20 | Reg.: $39 | You save: $7.80

  • Weight: 1.2 oz
  • Capacity: 0.9L

How are your rotator cuffs doing, sweet hiker? We all know hydration is incredibly important on trail, but reaching back to grab water bottles out of your side pockets can be a painful (literally) chore. The bottles are too hard to reach, so you have to stop and take your pack off when you want to have a drink, which you don’t do as often as you should because you have miles to make, gosh dang it, and as a result, many of us end up chronically under-hydrated.

That’s where this handy little shoulder water bottle pocket comes into play. It clips into your shoulder straps and provides easy access to one bottle so you can easily sip while you walk without dislocating a shoulder in the process. And it only adds 1.2 ounces to your pack weight, making it a guilt-free addition to your kit.

Round out your Big Three with HMG’s 20-degree down quilt, which should be warm enough for most thru-hikers in three-season conditions. The quilt contains a generous 13 ounces of ultra-premium 1000-fill down (which is about as lofty as it can possibly get), meaning a full 64% of this quilt’s total weight is dedicated to warm, fluffy insulation.

Having a warm enough sleeping bag is a matter of safety as well as comfort in the backcountry, and this quilt delivers while keeping the weight low at just 20 ounces for the regular length. Comes with pad attachment straps to ensure it stays in place even if you sleep rotisserie-style.

HMG Repack Cooking Cozy

Sale: $39.20 | Reg.: $49 | You save: $9.80

  • Weight: 1.5 oz
  • Materials: DCF11 + 3M Thinsulate Insulation

Ever cooked up hot food on a bitter night only to have it come out disappointingly lukewarm by the time it’s fully rehydrated and ready to be eaten? What a tragedy.

This adorable insulated cozy is just big enough to fit a single freeze-dried dinner and will help keep your food warmer longer. You can even save weight and space by repackaging premade dinners out of their mylar packaging and into lighter freezer bags without having to worry about losing the insulating properties of the mylar. Or make your own dinners and save money.

No matter how you approach hot food in the backcountry, the Repack will ensure that it’s actually still hot when you eat it. Also makes a great hand warmer while you’re sitting around waiting for dinner.

HMG Unbound 2 Tent

Sale: $559.20 | Reg.: $699 | You save: $139.80

  • Weight: 22 oz
  • Materials: DCF5, DCF10, No-See-Um Mesh

If you’re only going to buy one thing during Hyperlite Mountain Gear’s biggest sale of the year, the Unbound 2 tent would be a great choice. $560 for a two-person DCF trekking pole tent is an incredibly good deal. If you’ve ever shopped DCF tents before, you know how spendy they can be — but the ultralight, abrasion-resistant, sag-resistant fabric is worth it for many hikers. With the 20 percent discount from this sale, you’ll be unlikely to find another tent with similar specs at this price point.

This tent is very ultralight at 22 ounces and provides 28 square feet of living space with 48 inches of height at the peak. It’s a great choice for couples, but is also light enough to be carried by solo hikers who want a bit more room.

HMG Stuff Sack Pillow

Sale: $47.20 | Reg: $59 | You save: $11.80

  • Weight: 1.7 oz
  • Materials: DCF8 + Polartec 100-weight fleece lining

An ultralight stuff sack pillow that weighs less than two ounces and can double as a small organizational stuff sack during the day. Do you need it? Not really. But do you WANT it? Absolutely. Inflatable pillows are rarely as comfortable as you think they’re going to be, and they’re dead weight during the day.

In contrast, this fleece-lined sack still serves a purpose during the day, and at night you can stuff spare clothes or rain gear in there until you reach the desired level of firmness. As HMG points out, a good night’s sleep is priceless, so don’t sleep on this deal. (Heh.)
