What are the Best Restaurants on the Appalachian Trail? [POLL]

We’ve touched upon the Appalachian Trail’s best day hikes, section hikes, and shelters.  Now it’s time to tackle what really matters.  Of course, I refer to food.

From the perspective of a thru-hiker, there are few things that matter more than the meals to be devoured upon reaching the next town.  After a few consecutive days of cold tuna, ramen, and beef jerky, hikers’ dreams are infiltrated with visions of bacon cheeseburgers, pepperoni pizzas, and Ben and Jerry’s.

I was a few hundred miles south of Catawba when I first heard legend of The Homeplace.  The vivid imagery painted by fellow hikers (many of whom had never been there) caused my mind to go single-track in the direction of this southern style, old-fashioned restaurant.  I adjusted my pace to assure I would reach it during open hours.  Needless to say, this was one of the better decisions I’ve ever made.

There are great restaurants along the entire length of the AT, but which ones can’t be missed?

Let’s figure it out.

As usual, I reached out to our Facebook community to share their favorite restaurants on or near the Trail (accessible with a short hitch).  The most common responses have been included in the poll below.

Shout out to Corey White for this submission: “The dumpster behind the Dunkin Donuts in Gorham“.  Perhaps we’ll make a separate list for the Trail’s best dumpsters?

McCollums BBQ in Chambersburg, PA outside of Caledonia in the Michaux State Forest. VERY VERY good BBQ at a great price. The owner, Quinton, is a great guy too. Be sure to stop and grab some brisket or pulled pork. His barbecue sauce is delicious!!!!!

    Hey Zach,

I am currently doing research about some of the economic impacts of thru-hikers on small towns located along the AT. I am really interested in finding a list of popular restaurants that thru-hikers tend to stop at along the way. I came across this poll and was wondering if I could get access to the list you compiled. I have not yet hiked the AT, but am beginning in March 2017. Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Thanks!
