Alert: Fast-Growing Fire Closes Section of Continental Divide Trail and Colorado Trail Near Mt. Massive

The Forest Service has closed a section of the Continental Divide Trail/Colorado Trail between Twin Lakes and Tennessee Pass in response to a fast-growing wildfire that ignited yesterday on the slopes of Mt. Massive, Colorado’s second-tallest peak. The fire broke out on Sunday afternoon and rapidly swelled to over 1,000 acres, its perimeter overlapping the CDT.

Lake County, Colorado is under a mandatory evacuation order, and both the Continental Divide Trail Coalition and the Colorado Trail Foundation are urging hikers to stay out of this section until it reopens. The closure is from CDT mile 1167.5 to mile 1201.25.

“Northbound hikers should stop at Twin Lakes, and southbound hikers should stop at Tennessee Pass. Hikers can resupply and wait for updates in Leadville,” the Continental Divide Trail Coalition said in an announcement of the closure. No reroute is available at this time.

Hikers can track the fire’s status using the Watch Duty app, which currently lists the fire as roughly 1,000 acres and 0% containment.
