Day 2  Hawk Mountan to Ramrock

The plan was to make it to Gooch Mountain Shelter, but plans are meant to be changed.

It was a very wet night and I’m so glad I was in the Hawk Mountain Shelter.  But the rain was forecasted for all day.  It rained sideways and uphill on stuggling climbs today.

Equipment highlight

The Umbrella!  It held up great except for the high winds on Sassafrass Mountain.  Easily 50mph wind gusts, but I know some reached uo to 70mph.

Inspiration of the day:

  • Maggie Valle
  • Karl Leonard
  • Kieth Leonard.

These tent camped last night in the torrential downpour and trudged through crazy rains and pulled into Gooch Mountain Shelter ready to dry out and warm up.

After getting their gear mostly dry, at 4:00pm they decided to hike on.  They invited me along, but I had already setup camp for the night and hadn’t had dinner yet.  So I regrettfully declied since these are really cool people to be around.

After 20 minutes in the shelter, I knew I had to chase them down and join their group.  So I packed everthing up and headed off for more hiking.  Wondering all the time IF this was a good decision.  But I had rested for about 3 hours when I hit the trail again.  And the conditions were awesome with warm sunshine.

I finally caught up with them right before Ramrock.  They chose this as their campsite with great views.

  • Total AT Miles – 18.9
  • Today’s miles – 10.8

Tomorrow it’s Neel Gap and Mountain Crossing for a resupply  and hostel stop after taking on Blood Mountain.

Blood Mountain is were many call it quits.
