Gear Review: Vapur Element Water Bottle

A few weeks ago I was at my local REI looking for a new water bottle. Instead of purchasing a Nalgene like I was planning to, I walked away with another product that had caught my eye: the Vapur Element Water Bottle.

I’ve long since used SmartWater and Gatorade bottles during my wilderness outings. However, these bottles tend to turn gross quickly, and often need to be replaced. This is why I’m looking for a product that will last me a long time when I go on long-distance backpacking trips.

Pros

  • I like that this bottle has a carabiner to clip it to my pack. Too many times I’ve had water bottles fall out of my side pockets while I was leaning down during a rock scramble. The carabiner is removable, and I can use it for my bear bag as well.
  • The bottle is collapsible, so when it’s empty, I can just roll it up and stash it away. This is great for camping, and also for regular life, when I can easily keep this in my purse.
  • A 1 liter Vapur bottle weighs 1.4 oz, which is about the same weight as a 1 liter SmartWater bottle.

Cons

  • The wide mouth of this bottle does not fit a Sawyer filter (an older, narrower version does).  I use Aquamira to treat my water, but if you’re using a Sawyer, keep in mind that you will need to bring the squeeze bag with you.
  • Other reviews on this product have warned about the bottle leaking. I haven’t encountered this problem, but I do recommend that the best place to store any water bottle is on the outside of the pack. It gives you easy access for staying hydrated, and minimizes the risk of your gear getting wet in case of a leak.

I’ve been using an older model of the Vapur bottle for a while with a sports cap with the little clear plastic cover that’s a separate piece, and I keep losing those little covers, so I’m really happy to see they have one with an attached cover. I prefer to use a hydration pack for backpacking, but I love these little collapsible bottles for travel.

I have hiked with these too. I like the carabiner, the collapsibility, the weight, and it works great with the shoulder strap bungees on my pack. The only thing I don’t like is the crinkling sound it makes while walking.

I have had two of the 1.5L clear blue Vapur Bottles that started leaking at the bottom. One was on day 3 of a 5 day backpacking trip. they sent me a replacement fro free, so kudos to customer service. The replacement started leaking recently as well. I think I am looking for another water bottle since I can’t have one start leaking on another multi-day trip.
