HikeFor a Cause

This hike is more than a 6 month vacation.  It’s more than a growth opportunity for me.  It’s more than getting back to nature.  It’s now about hiking with a purpose…hiking miles for others.

I’ve been contemplating hiking for more than myself, but I had a few hang-ups with this idea.  First, what if no one contributes to my fundraising efforts?  Secondly, what if I fail to make the entire hike or life happens and I have to cancel my hike? Thirdly, what about those fundraising sites — they charge big fees to use them.

So after a lot of online research, trying to find the best way to raise funds and to help motivate me to success, I finally registered!

After a few contacts with HikeFor and they finally added my cause — the Air Force Enlisted Village.

I dealt with the issue of “what if no one supports my hike” by realizing that’s not really important.  I plan on making my own contribution to my cause no matter what.  So even if it’s just me supporting my cause, then success is guaranteed.  However, I’d love to have your support!

When thinking about the success of my hike, it doesn’t matter.  With the HikeFor pledge site, people will pledge per mile.  If I hike one mile or 2197…it’s all a win for the charity.  While my goal is to raise $1 for every mile along the AT…if I only raise $21.97 (one cent per mile) it’s still more than the charity had before my hike.

When I looked into hiking for a cause, I quickly realized that many fund raising sites are making BIG MONEY at the cost of 3 to 10 %.  Normally, the websites will charge at a minimum the cost of credit card processing fees.  While I understand this, it doesn’t make me happy.  Really…big corporate bank cards can’t afford to write-off this cost for the sake of philanthropy?  Guess NOT!

So thank goodness for HikeFor.com which is just a pledge site and all, 100%, of the pledge goes to the Air Force Enlisted Village.

For a little comparison, here’s a few breakdowns of what it will take to raise $2189 and meet my goal!

  •   $0.01/mile = $21.89 and would take 100 donors
  •   $0.05/mile = $109.46 and would take 20 donors
  •   $0.10/mile = $218.90 and would take 10 donors
  •   $1.00/mile = $2189 and would take one generous donor

My cause is the Air Force Enlisted Village.

If you are inclined, make a pledge at:

No pressure…any funds raised will help this 501c3 charity.  No money required up front.  I’ll contact you AFTER my hike for you to make your contribution directly to AFEV based on your pledge per mile.
