Well, today is #NationalSmileDay. Not sure when that started but I do know this, there is always a way to find a reason to smile. We don't need a National Day for it but I suppose you can't be reminded enough. I haven't posted in a while. I injured myself a few weeks back and hopped off trail in Washington while attempting to muscle out a large mile per day average to complete the PCT (the Canadian border SOBO to NorCal) by this coming weekend. But with this foot injury taking much longer to heal than I would like, it only makes sense that I throw in the towel for good on my PCT attempt this year. I'm not focused on what could have been or disappointed that I'm not able to finish the trail this year. What I am focused on is smiling about what an incredible year that I HAVE had. I have been so fortunate to have had another amazing year of hiking. Back to back near 4,000 mile hiking seasons bringing my current total to roughly 13,000 miles. So many highs and lows and ups and downs and incredible people I've met along the way. I think back and smile about all of it. And even though it's the second year in a row that I haven't been able to complete the PCT, most of you know me well enough to know that the adventure isn't over. When I was forced off the PCT last year due to wildfires, I just found adventure elsewhere. In Colorado, in Pennsylvania, and ultimately in my SOBO winter thru hike. Rest assured that when my foot heals, I will be back out on the prowl for some more adventure. And the PCT isn't going anywhere, I'll get her. It ain't about the miles, it's about the smiles. And I have plenty to smile about. Thank you all for the support and following along on all my adventures. I appreciate it beyond measure. Until the next adventure I will be doing my best to keep in shape. I'll get back to sharing some of the epic photos and stories that I still have in my back pocket. And for those of you who are heading to the Appalachian Long Distance Hiking Association's Gathering this weekend in Williamstown, Massachusetts…I will be the closing presenter on Sunday and I'll be sharing stories and pictures from my SOBO Winter Thru Hike of the Appalachian Trail!!

Taroko National Park is one of the nine national parks in Taiwan and was named after the Taroko Gorge, the landmark gorge of the park carved by the Liwu River. Taroko Gorge is an impressive 19-km-long canyon, situated near Taiwan's east coast. A section of the Zhuilu Old Trail leads 500 meter along the vertical Zhuilu Cliff. Originally, this trail was part of a longer cross-island mountain pass built by indigenous groups in the area. Peak bagged! Successful day hike of Mount Whitney, highest point in contiguous USA, 14,508 feet in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. Sept 2016. Start time 4:00 am at Whitney Portal trailhead (8,360ft). Time up 6 hours 40 min (my pace slowed above 13.6K feet trailcrest where I really felt the lack of oxygen. The final 1.9 miles was tough. The rest was easy in comparison). Hung out on summit 20 minutes (might have stayed longer but I started getting a headache plus it was freezing and windy). Arrived back at portal 4:30 pm. Total hike time: 12.5 hours. 22 miles RT. 6000+ ft gain… Sequoia national park fills the landscape in the background to the west; also behind me on the Whitney summit you see the Smithsonian shelter, which was built in 1909. Whats good!! Im Erick but you can just call me Styles. I live in a small 45 min outside of Boston, MA. My love for hiking and just being outside all started when i was young after climbing Mt. Washington NH. Most of my hiking is in NH and Vermont mountains, and hiked the Appalachian Trail (AT) in 2015. This year I'm going to attempt a PCT-CDT calendar year hike. follow along for this crazy adventure!!
