Fumbling my way…

I’m thru hiking the PCT starting April 12. I’ve been seriously planning it for 3 years, and fantasizing about it for much longer.  It dawned on me yesterday that I’m already living my thru hiking dream. I’m no longer looking longingly at pictures of other peoples completed gear set ups, I’m looking at my own. I’m not dreaming about what I would put in resupply boxes, I’ve got 7 of them strewn across my dining room. I’ve been obsessing over ounces, geeking out over compressed dehydrated wipes and hoping my new rain system works better than my last.  I bought my ticket to San Diego last week, got my hotel  and a ride to the trailhead. I’m stunned with excitement and that healthy kind of fear that gives you an exhilarating knot in your stomach.

I totally relate  it to getting ready to have a baby. I read everything I could get my hands on about childbirth and being a parent, I researched, talked to a gajillion people, watched  hundreds of videos, exercised, and took amazing care of myself .  So much to my surprise when that baby finally came, I realized I had no idea what I was doing!   Nothing went as I had planned, I felt overwhelmed, unprepared and totally exhausted, but I was SO IN LOVE with that baby!!! I have fumbled my way through motherhood and thank god every day for the amazing miracle that is my son. I’m thinking this hike will be just like that, and I can’t wait.
