Hikers Urged To Leave as Ptarmigan Fire Forces Closure of Final Stretch of PCT

Hikers on the northern end of the Pacific Crest Trail should prepare for an immediate change in plans as the Ptarmigan Fire is expected to close the trail between Methow Pass (northbound mile 2604.5) and the Northern Terminus.

The closure will include the Harts Pass area, one of the most popular access points for northbound and southbound PCT hikers. Officials are asking all hikers and campers currently in this section of the trail and the Harts Pass area to leave immediately for their safety.

Officials will begin sweeping the trail and surrounding areas as soon as possible to notify anyone who may still be in the closure zone.

The fire is currently burning across 1,600 acres and is 0% contained, with fire activity expected to increase. The Pacific Crest Trail Association announced the closure yesterday and said that an official Forest Service closure order is expected to be issued soon. Until then, hikers are encouraged to avoid entering the area and to make alternate travel plans.

If you’re currently hiking the PCT in Northern Washington, don’t wait for the formal closure to be posted. Fire conditions can change rapidly, and leaving the area now is the safest course of action.

Hikers should continue monitoring official updates from land management agencies and the Pacific Crest Trail Association for the latest information on closures and reopening timelines. They can also track the Ptarmigan Fire’s status on Watch Duty.
