Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest Issues Bear-Resistant Food Storage Order, Including 23-Miles of PCT
The Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest has issued a food storage order for all backcountry users. The order is effective immediately and will remain in place until further notice. This includes a 23-mile stretch of the PCT from Bear Gap (mile 2331.6) to Suiattle Pass (mile 2554.6).
The order is in response to an increase in bear-to-human interactions, according to the forest service. The order applies to all backcountry users, including hikers, campers, and backpackers.
All backcountry users are required to store their food in bear-resistant containers or hang their food at least 10 feet off the ground and 4 feet from any tree trunk. Failure to comply with the order could result in a fine of up to $5,000 or six months in jail. The PCTA strongly encourages all backcountry users to comply with the order to help keep themselves and bears safe.
