Not Your Average Pacific Crest Trail Gear List
Okay, I lied. This is pretty much your typical PCT Gear list. But everyone loves a gear list, right?
The Big Three
Pack: G4-20 Ultralight 42 Backpack
Tent: Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo (Backpacking Tent)
At first I was planning on using the stakes included with the Lunar Solo, but after breaking two on a section hike of the Arizona Trail, I decided to swap them out for MSR Mini Groundhog Stakes (and will be carrying a few extra!)
The tent is a trekking pole tent, so I will be carrying the REI Co-op Flash Carbon Trekking Poles
Sleep System: Enlightened Equipment Enigma Quilt (10 degrees), Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Pillow, and the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite
Even though its a 10 degree quilt, I am a cold sleeper and will probably add a sleeping bag liner before hitting the Sierras
Cooking and Hydration
Stove: BRS Ultralight Backpacking Titanium BRS 3000T
Utensils: Toaks 650 mL Titanium Pot and Toaks Titanium Folding Spork
I’ll also be adding the Sea-to-Summit XMug before the PCT because I want the ability to drink hot beverages while I wait for my dinner to cook
For Kitchen Chores: GSI Outdoors Compact Scraper and a generic bandana
My hiking partner on the Arizona Trail had one of these scrapers and his pot was gorgeously clean after each meal while my hot chocolate had some mac and cheese chunks.
Water Filter: Sawyer Squeeze Water Filter System
After struggling to fill up the Sawyer water bladders, I’ll be swapping them out for the Cnoc Vecto 2L Water Bladder, which has the ability to be filled from the wide mouthed top instead of only from the narrow opening at the top. I’ll also be adding two of the Cnoc Vesica 1 L Collapsible Bottles as a reusable alternative to Smart Water bottles and a lighter option than a Nalgene bottle.
Clothing
While I did invest my warm outer layers, a lot of my clothing was thrifted. The thrifted items are as follows:
- Running shorts (2)
- Pretty stoked I found a pair with flamingos on them
- Quick dry t-shirt
- Nike thermal long sleeve shirt
- Planning to use as a base-layer
- Running tights (for an extra layer if it gets cold)
- Ball cap, sunglasses, and a beanie
Items I thought were worth the investment:
- Puffy Jacket: Mountain Hardware Ghost Shadow
- Rain Gear: Outdoor Research Helium Jacket and Pants
- Gloves: Outdoor Research Revel Shell Mitts, Flurry Sensor Gloves, and Waterproof Liners
- Is a three layered glove system a bit excessive? Yes. But I want my hands to be warm and dry
- SmartWool Merino Leggings
- REI Co-op Active Hipster Underwear
- Patagonia Active Mesh Bra
Hygiene:
For #1: I am in love with the Kula Cloth. Its a reusable, anti microbial pee cloth. If you have not been blessed with the ability to stand while peeing, I highly recommend it.
For #2: TheTentLab Deuce #2 UL Trowel
For everything else:
- REI Co-op Multi Towel Mini
- Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Liquid Soap
- Toothbrush (Cut in half, of course)
- Travel sized toothpaste
- Safety pins and band-aids (for blisters)
Misc
I’ll also be carrying a small journal and a pen, my phone, wallet, and a power bank. I’m still trying to figure out how to carry an entire bag of kale with me…looking into dehydrator options, stay tuned for updates.

Thanks for posting this, Rachel. This 2021 PCT thru-hike attempt will be my first time doing a serious backpacking trip longer than a week or two in the West. Most of my experience has been on the AT and other eastern trails. I am a dedicated gear junkie looking at lists just helps me feed that addiction.
You’ll be about a month ahead of me.
I’ll be following you as well as all our fellow PCT bloggers for The Trek.

Thanks for the shoutout on CNOC Outdoors Vecto and Vesicas! We love seeing folks using 2 Vesicas in place of the Smart Water Bottles. This is exactly what we had in mind for these bottles. We’d love a review of how it is working out for you once you’ve tested it out on the trail. We can’t wait to follow along.
